Why I Moved to a Toronto Houseboat (And Why I'd Do It Again)

"You live on a what?"

I get that question almost every time I meet someone new.

When I tell people I live on a floating home in Toronto, they usually picture a tiny boat bobbing around in the middle of Lake Ontario. Then I show them a picture of my home—with two bedrooms, a rooftop patio, a full kitchen, and panoramic water views—and their jaws drop.

Six years later, I can honestly say moving to a floating home was one of the best decisions my family has ever made.

We Were Looking for More Than Just a House

Like many families in Toronto, we were caught in the cycle of smaller yards and busier lives.

We didn't just want another property.

We wanted a different way of living.

Somewhere that felt peaceful without leaving the city.

Somewhere our kids could grow up surrounded by nature instead of traffic.

When I first discovered Toronto's floating homes at Bluffers Park Marina, it felt like I'd stumbled onto one of the city's best-kept secrets.

It Feels Like Cottage Living—Every Day

People spend thousands of dollars every summer to escape the city and spend weekends at the cottage.

I wake up there every morning.

My morning coffee overlooks the water.

We watch swans glide past our windows.

Swans stop by the dock.

Sunsets become part of dinner.

Sometimes I have to remind myself that downtown Toronto is only about 25 minutes away.

The Rooftop Changed Everything

One of my favourite parts of our home is the rooftop.

It's become our second living room.

We eat dinner outside all summer.

Friends come over for drinks.

The kids play while we watch the boats come in.

Every gathering somehow turns into people saying, "I had no idea places like this existed in Toronto."

The Community Is Unlike Anywhere Else

One thing I never expected was how connected everyone would be.

Neighbours actually know each other here.

People wave when they walk by.

Someone is always willing to lend a hand.

It feels more like a small lakeside town than a marina in Canada's largest city.

It's Surprisingly Normal

People assume living on a floating home means giving things up.

In reality, life is incredibly normal.

We have city water.

Hydro.

High-speed internet.

Garbage pickup.

Parking.

Amazon deliveries.

The only real difference is that our backyard happens to be Lake Ontario.

Would I Do It Again?

Without hesitation.

Living on a floating home isn't for everyone.

If you want a perfectly manicured suburban lawn, this probably isn't your lifestyle.

But if you love nature, value experiences over square footage and want to feel like you're on vacation every day, it's hard to imagine a better place to live.

I came here looking for a unique home.

I found an entirely different way of living.
