Raising Two Kids on a Toronto Houseboat

One of the first questions people ask me is:
"Isn't it dangerous raising kids on the water?"
It's a fair question.
As a mom of two young children, safety was my biggest concern before we moved here.
Today, it's probably the question I worry about the least.

Kids Adapt Faster Than Adults
Children are incredibly good at understanding boundaries.
From the time they could walk, our kids learned where they could play, when life jackets were needed, and how to safely move around the dock.
It became second nature.
Just like children who grow up around farms learn about tractors or kids who grow up near busy roads learn about traffic, our children learned to respect the water.
Nature Becomes Their Playground
Instead of watching wildlife on YouTube, my kids watch it from the living room.
They've grown up spotting swans, ducks, turtles, fish and herons.
They know the seasons by watching the marina change.
They spend more time outside than I ever did growing up.
They Have a Community
One thing that surprised me most is how much everyone looks out for one another.
Our neighbours know our kids by name.
People wave.
They stop to chat.
It's a close-knit community where children are surrounded by adults who genuinely care about them.
That sense of community is becoming harder to find.
They Think This Is Normal
The funniest part?
My kids don't realize how unusual our lifestyle is.
To them, boats outside the window are normal.
Walking down a dock to get home is normal.
Watching sunsets every evening is normal.
I hope those memories stay with them forever.
Yes, There Are Challenges
Winter means doing a little more maintenance.
Windy days require paying attention.
Living on the water isn't exactly the same as living in a subdivision.
But every home comes with trade-offs.
For us, the benefits far outweigh the challenges.
I Wouldn't Change It
Watching my children grow up surrounded by water, wildlife and an incredible community has been one of the greatest gifts this home has given our family.
